First Aid Salve

Roots and Leaves First Aid Salve is a handcrafted, multi-purpose healing salve made with UMF 16+ Manuka honey, black seed oil, organic sunflower oil solar-infused for three months with calendula, comfrey, and plantain herbs, organic mango butter, vitamin E, neem oil, hemp seed oil, castor oil, beeswax, and organic lavender and geranium essential oils — a deeply nourishing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial salve in a 2 oz glass jar that soothes eczema, diaper rash, cuts, burns, rashes, and acne without steroids, parabens, or synthetic fragrance.

This product was born out of a personal necessity for our daughter's diaper rashes and eczema. We had tried other products that never seemed to help and I refused to apply steroid cream to her sensitive skin. As an herbalist, I knew the healing powers of Manuka honey, so I created this blend with other powerful skin-soothing ingredients to bring you the ultimate salve. This salve is a nutritious living food for your skin to aid in healing, reducing inflammation, redness, and uncomfortable itching. It is also amazing for cuts, rashes, burns, and acne — our go-to salve for pretty much everything.

This salve will NOT heal the root cause of eczema, as eczema is a complicated issue that can be related to gut or food sensitivity. This salve helps to soothe redness and irritation associated with several skin issues.

Let's chat about a few of our favorite ingredients and why we chose them.

Manuka Honey (UMF 16+):
Manuka Honey is made up of several compounds found only in honey from New Zealand's native manuka bush. Application of Manuka honey to the skin helps keep skin moist, reduces inflammation, and inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria including Staphylococcus, commonly found on eczema-prone skin. It is extremely important to use a Manuka honey with at least UMF 15+. The higher the UMF grade, the greater the presence of unique Manuka honey attributes.

Low Grade: UMF 5–9 | Medium Grade: UMF 10–15 | Superior High Grade: UMF 16+

Black Seed Oil:

Black seed oil is rich in antioxidants and contains three natural components — thymol, thymoquinone, and thymohydroquinone — responsible for its ability to fight viral, bacterial, and fungal infections. It reduces skin inflammation, cleanses pores, and is effective as an acne treatment.

Hemp Seed Oil:

Hemp contains all essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary for human life, plus a unique protein called globule edestin similar to globulin in human blood plasma. Hemp seed oil possesses powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Neem Oil:

Neem is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and analgesic. Its two main anti-inflammatory compounds — nimbin and nimbidin — have properties comparable to common non-steroidal and steroidal drugs. Many people report fast relief from discomfort upon application.

Calendula, Comfrey & Plantain Herbs:

We use a solar cold infusion process for three months to safely extract all the properties of the herbs and retain their healing benefits. These herbs have amazing anti-inflammatory properties that help heal and soothe eczema and wounds.

A note on scent and texture: The smell of this salve is unique — one local customer says it smells like freshly sharpened pencils! The black seed oil has a strong odor that is mostly covered by the other ingredients but still comes through. Once applied to the skin the smell fades quickly and does not linger. The salve can be slightly sticky due to the honey, but not overly so, and stays on the skin for hours bringing its healing effect.

Made with organic, raw, and unfiltered materials when possible. Packaged in a 2 oz glass container. We never include parabens, artificial fragrance, triglycerides, or other synthetic materials.
